Walnut chairs & upholstery

A solid walnut chair frame and a wipe-clean upholstered seat need two different routines, and neither takes more than a minute.

The seat

Faux leather cleans with a barely damp cloth and, for anything greasy, a drop of mild dish soap. Dry it straight away rather than letting it air off.

Keep solvents, alcohol wipes and "leather conditioner" away from it — genuine-leather products are formulated to feed a hide and will haze a synthetic surface.

The frame

Treat it exactly like a table: dry dusting, an occasional damp wipe, and a thin coat of hardwax oil once a year. Pay attention to the arms and the top of the back, which take hand oils daily.

Chairs live a harder life than tables. Check the joints once a year by lifting the chair and gently twisting — if there is any movement, tell us and we will send the right fixing.

Floors

Felt pads under all four feet, replaced when they wear thin. They protect your floor and, just as importantly, keep grit from being ground into the end grain of the legs.

Never drag a chair sideways while someone is sitting in it — that single habit loosens more chair joints than years of ordinary use.
